Bio
Marcus Verhagen (PhD 1994, advised by Carol Armstrong and T.J. Clark) wrote his doctoral thesis on late nineteenth-century French art and mass culture. Working primarily on contemporary art in the years since 2002, he has published essays and reviews in magazines, most regularly in Art Monthly, and in periodicals such as New Left Review and Third Text. His book Flows and Counterflows; Globalisation in Contemporary Art was published by Sternberg Press in 2017. Another book, focusing on art in the “24/7 society” and provisionally titled Viewing Velocities, is due out in 2023 with Verso. He edits the series “New Directions in Contemporary Art” for the specialist art press Lund Humphries. Living in London with his wife and daughter, he teaches at Sotheby’s Institute of Art and spends as much time as he can in his local pool and other bodies of water.
