The Department of History of Art, University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Indigenous and/or Pre-colonial and/or Colonial Art and Visual Cultures of Latin America, tenure-track.
The Department seeks candidates maintaining an active research agenda in the study of Indigenous and/or Pre-colonial and/or Colonial Art and Visual Cultures of Latin America, broadly defined. Scholars whose research and teaching reflect changes taking place in the field by means of critical, intersectional, and interdisciplinary approaches and/or interregional/global frames of inquiry, including Indigenous, postcolonial, and decolonial perspectives, are especially encouraged to apply. In recognition of the complex overlapping histories, continuities, and discontinuities of indigeneity and colonization, successful candidates may engage with pre-1500 visual and material cultures regardless of their chronological or geographical specializations in Latin America. A specialist in Indigenous and/or Pre-colonial and/or Colonial Art and Visual Cultures of Latin America will fortify, decenter, and expand our existing and emergent clusters of departmental inquiry. A successful candidate may be trained in relevant languages for research and mentoring as well as be engaged in the study of images, pictorial manuscript traditions, artifacts, architecture, archaeological sites, heritage and display economies, or other visual, material, and cultural practices. The Department welcomes research profiles that may include international collaboration, curatorial scholarship, public scholarship or outreach, archive initiatives, activism, cultural revitalization, historical conservation, or other modes of intellectual and institutional labor.
