Undergraduate Seminar: Museum Seminar: Research and Presentation of Works of Art

    Jacquelynn Baas

An exhibition of works of art from the collection of the Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive opening July 14, 2016 in the museum’s new building, is the focus of a seminar on how to research and effectively present works of art to the public.

The BAM/PFA collection of Asian, European, and American art extends from the Renaissance to the present and includes all media.  Seminar leader Jacquelynn Baas (who served as director of the museum for ten years in the 1990s) has made a preliminary selection of objects organized into eight non-chronological groupings collectively titled “Berkeley Eye.”  Students will research and write a short text label for one object in each of these eight mini-exhibitions, choosing one object to focus on in a scholarly essay.

Participants must be junior or senior standing.  Preference will be given to students who have taken a range of courses in the History of Art Department.  Enrollment is limited to 12.

This course fulfills the following Major requirements: Contingent on final course project.
