    The Shock of the Modern: European Art, 1900-1940

    In this course, for which no prior art history experience is required, we will look at the major developments, movements, and paradigms of European modernism from the turn of the century to the beginning of World War II. Topics covered include abstraction, the avant-garde’s use of mass media (from print to photography and cinema), modernist design and architecture, art and utopia, and art under totalitarianism. In addition to the foundational methodological and historical questions in the study of modernism, special emphasis will be given to work of women artists and art in the context of socialist politics.

    No previous art history preparation required.

    This course fulfills the following Major requirements: Geographical area (A), and Chronological period (III).
