This seminar satisfies a University-wide requirement that all first-time Graduate Student Instructors take a pedagogy course, and it qualifies for the GSI Teaching and Resource Center’s Certificate of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. It can be taken concurrently with a first teaching assignment or in the semester prior to appointment. Designed for graduate students interested in teaching with visual materials in the humanities and social sciences, this seminar addresses teaching practices and pedagogical goals as well as methods specific to art history and visual studies. They include strategies for creating inclusive and effective learning environments; grading assignments fairly and strengthening student skills; advising students so that they develop knowledge in a subject and acquire broadly-applicable learning practices that enable them to work to the best of their potential. Discipline-specific goals include: helping students think in visual terms; sharpen reading skills in the humanities; develop familiarity with art historical theories/methods; write analytically about visual-material culture; and develop independent thinking in art history. The seminar is also designed to help you prepare for independent teaching through development of a teaching portfolio. The course will address the challenges of “instructional resilience,” precarity, and labor action.
