This course will examine the impact of the Mediterranean sea on the visual culture of Renaissance Italy. Throughout the course we will examine how water unites and divides. How did trade develop, and what was traded? How did Italian artists engage with the visual culture of the Ottoman Empire? We will pay close attention to the complex maritime economies that emerged in Italy, specifically Venice, Pisa, and Genoa.
