Reading & Writing about Visual Experience: Language Arts
Tiffany Taylor
Monday, Wednesday: 11:00am-12:30pm
This course primarily focuses on the analysis of conceptual art. Through the juxtaposition of text and image in art, we will explore and challenge our assumptions and theories about language and art. Each week, we will focus on one or several related artworks that use primarily visual modalities. This course also briefly focuses on the analysis of photography, film, sound, and performance. We will develop our collaborative analysis of painting and close reading of texts as we conduct research with secondary sources and develop skills for argumentative writing. This course consists of synchronous discussion sessions and asynchronous assignments to support the student’s development as a writer. The course will result in a final paper that involves analyzing an artwork of the student’s choosing. Upon completing this course, students will have a strong foundation in expository and academic writing and research. This course fulfills the second half of the University of California’s Reading and Composition requirement.
