Korean Art in the Museum
Friday: 2:00-3:00pm
We go to museums not only to see artworks we already know, but also to encounter an art world that is unfamiliar to us. The field of Korean art is one such art world–underrepresented outside Korea. In this course, we will primarily follow the baby steps toward Korean art by simulating museum visits. In doing so, we will also take meta-conscious approaches to our own process of learning about new artworks in the museum setting, the space furnished with information fetched by those with different political persuasions, backgrounds in cultural knowledge, and disciplinary orientations. How can we be sure of what we know about a new culture when it is processed and supplied by those who did not in fact partake in its production?
No prior knowledge of the subject or the Korean language is required.
