This course will offer a general overview of artistic works produced during the period extending from the 1860s to the 1970s – when some cultural critics began speaking of « the end of painting. » Over this long period, we will challenge the idea of novelty, accompanying the emergence of new art movements, as well as anti-arts movements; in doing so, we will uncover the continuity of art history. For example, we will look at Picasso engaging with classical art works.

We will begin with a brief look back at the European roots. We will explore the concept of modernity that emerged at the end of the 19th-century, with pioneers of Modern Art such as Realists, Impressionists, and Symbolists, before examining the development of new « -isms » at the beginning of the 20th-century. In the second half of the course, we will then tackle the shift to the United States and move away from the Eurocentric Model. After World War II, we will suggest a few ways to find our way through the new emerging art forms, including installations and performances, and the growing number of artistic experiments. 

Through this course, students will develop an understanding of the conditions for the development of Modern Art, which will help them engage with the art they are seeing.
