Jennifer Stager
Tuesday, Thursday: 11:00 - 12:30PM
This course surveys Greek sculpture, painting, and architecture from the Persian invasions to the death of Alexander the Great. In addition to close study of the major works (Olympia, the Riace bronzes, the Parthenon, Praxiteles’ Knidian Aphrodite and Hermes, the Mausoleum, etc.), we shall pay particular regard to their cultural context and to key issues such as the relation between Greek art and life, nakedness and gender, war and the warrior, the symposion, narrative strategies, art and politics, the luxury crafts, and the status of the creative artist. Wherever possible, newly discovered work will be included and given special attention.
This course fulfills the following Major requirements: Geographical areas (A) and Chronological period (I).
