The History of Art Visual Resources Collection is a departmental facility located in the Main Library that circulates its 400,000 35 mm slides and 50,000 digital images of art and architecture primarily to History of Art and Classics faculty and their GSIs for use in History of Art and Classics courses. The History of Art VRC also makes 35 mm slides to support the instructional needs of the History of Art Department, adding approximately 8,000 images per year to the collection. As a courtesy, slides from the collection may be borrowed for a limited time by:
UCB faculty from other departments teaching on campus
Graduate Student Instructors from other departments who have Course Instructor status (i.e. are listed in the Schedule of Classes as the Course Instructor)
History of Art or Classics seminars for the purpose of seminar presentations
Speakers presenting papers at the Berkeley Symposium
The collection is not open to undergraduates (unless enrolled in a History of Art or Classics seminar), graduate students from other departments (unless listed as a Course Instructor or enrolled in a History of Art or Classics seminar), or to anyone outside the University including University Extension and GTU.

Conditions for use

Borrowing privileges are granted for the purpose of teaching university classes on campus. Borrowing for use off campus is not permitted.
Professors from other departments borrowing slides for use by students in their classes must check out these slides personally. Student browsing and direct selection of slides is not permitted.
Any professor with borrowing privileges may designate one Research Assistant to check out slides on his or her behalf by writing a letter to the Curator of Visual Resources identifying the RA by name. The professor must be a current, authorized borrower and will be held responsible for all slides checked out on his or her behalf by the designated RA.
Slides may not be duplicated, published, or scanned. Slides are protected under the 1976 Copyright Act and the 1988 Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Requests for reproduction of images must be referred to the copyright owner. In most cases, the History of Art Visual Resources Collection is not the copyright owner.
The Department of the History of Art cannot supply either projectors or screens. Projection equipment may be reserved through the Office of Media Services at 643-8637.
Any exception to the above rules must be approved by the Department Chair.
Orientations are required before first use of the Slide Library.

Borrowing Procedure

Explain your needs to the clerk at the circulation desk in the History of Art Visual Resources Collection. For complicated requests, the circulation clerk may refer you to one of the permanent Curatorial staff.
New patrons will be asked to fill out an authorization form that includes local contact information. A borrowing card will be issued with a borrowing authorization number that will be used each time slides are borrowed. This card will be valid for one academic year and may be renewed annually, pending verification of continuing University status, by updating local contact information,.
Slides may be selected from the files up to one week in advance and set aside for later retrieval in a designated area of the VRC, but may be taken away no sooner than the day before they are to be used.
The borrower must leave a photocopy bearing the label information of all slides borrowed, together with the borrower's authorization number, name, phone number, email address, and date. The total number of slides removed must be recorded in the circulation log.
All slides must be returned within 72 hours. When returned, they must be checked in at the circulation desk and verified against the photocopied labels.
Lost or damaged slides will be charged at a rate of $10.00 each.
Non-compliance with the above procedures may result in revocation of borrowing privileges.
