COURSES FALL 2007

Histart 137 ARTS OF SOUTHEAST ASIA
Tuesdays and Thursdays 12:30-2:00
106 Moffit, CCN 05463
Joanna Williams

A survey of the arts of Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, Viet Nam, Laos, and Burma (a.k.a. Myanmar). We will look first at indigenous traditions of the distant past and their modern survivals. Then we will consider the spectacular Buddhist and Hindu monuments (e.g. Borobudur, Angkor, Pagan) loosely in chronological order by sub-region, from the 5th through the 18th centuries. A sense of the interaction between the local tradition and imported ideas and techniques is a goal of the course. (As)

Letters in bold following individual upper division course descriptions cite the History of Art major breadth requirement fulfilled by the course.  (As=Asian, An=Ancient, Me=Medieval, R=Renaissance, B=Baroque, Mo=Modern.)
